Orange and Rockland Gas Main Replacement Project

O&R is planning to start a Gas Main Replacement Project beginning June 11, 2026, on River Road in Montebello with our contractor Riggs and Distler Inc. I wanted to notify you in advance and provide you with some additional details in case constituents reach out to your office.

This work involves replacing approximately 2,500 feet of existing 2” bare steel gas main with new main to strengthen and improve the safety, reliability, and performance of the gas system. Trenching will occur along:

  • River Road
  • Moriah Lane
  • Rocklyn Drive

This work will also involve replacing 26 gas services, and customers will be notified in advance for scheduling of the service replacement. As part of this work, indoor gas meters and regulators may be relocated outdoors to improve accessibility for utility personnel.

In some cases, work may require excavation on private property. All disturbed areas will be restored, including re-seeding grass and repairing impacted surfaces. During construction, a dedicated inspector will be onsite and road plates will be used to maintain access to driveways and across trenches.

Please note that there will be brief gas service interruptions when individual homes are connected to the new main. O&R personnel will relight pilots for customers’ gas appliances to minimize inconvenience.

The project represents an O&R investment of approximately $1,045,390 in the neighborhood’s natural gas infrastructure. The work is expected to take approximately 7–8 weeks to complete, weather permitting.

Upon mobilization, the contractor will implement proper work zone safety measures (i.e., signage, cones, etc.) in accordance with the NYS Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
